Our monthly photowalk this week… 53 rsvp’d.. about 15 showed… why? threat of rain.., it’s a shame, because bad weather can make for wonderful moody photographs. Colors are saturated, reflective puddles are everywhere, the clouds have mood to them, steam rises from the warm streets, all things you can add to your photographs.
At the beginning of the walk, a few shots were taken, and then the rain moved in. Many headed home, but about a dozen of us waited it out in the parking garage.. Waiting isn’t always a bad thing, it makes you really look for a shot or try something new… before boredom set in, I played with my camera… set it to monochrome and tried some handheld hdr shots of one of the lights, not a great shot, but I tried, I played and continued to learn the capabilities of my camera.
I for one was watching the rain, and where the puddles were forming, you don’t need a large puddle to create a great reflection- just get down low as I did in this shot of Wayne & Jerry shooting from the other side.
Shooting in the same location repeatedly will force you to slow down, think and notice things you hadn’t before, to try a new lens or technique or to search for a new way to capture a subject you have shot before. I didnt want to shoot the Coleman Bridge for the 50th time, so, I walked down the street and found the windmill, and a quick b/w conversion helped give it mood.
Don’t limit yourself, it’s YOUR photography, YOUR vision, there are no rules, capture what appeals to YOU.
